Piazza del Popolo is home to several fountains. At the base of the ancient Egyptian obelisk, which graces the centre of the piazza, stands the Fontana dei Quattro Leoni (Fountain of the Four Lions), 1828, which was designed by the Roman architect Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1830). The fountain actually takes the form of four mini-fountains, each comprising a marble lion sitting on a stepped plinth.

Jun 2013. The fountain is right next to the Duomo so you will surely see it while you visit. There are banks to sit down and relax, it is like a little park. In the night it is far more elegant with the lights. Great place to feel the fresh air. The lions are really realistic. Definately a must see. Suggest edits to improve what we show.

Fountain of the Lions. The current fountain of the Lions replaced a sixteenth century fountain by Giacomo della Porta moved to Piazza Nicosia in 1950. The work is by Valadier (1823) and was part of the project for the rearrangement of the town-planning scheme including Piazza del Popolo and the Pincio Hill, turned into a public garden.
